Good Life…Good People
Our main focus at Good Life Productions is creating outstanding and effective videos, but our company philosophy extends beyond our productions to the qualities that make up a good life – good friends and family, good health, giving something back to society, and having time to do the things that bring you joy.
For Neal, that’s cooking great food – lucky me!
For me, it’s enjoying music of all kinds and performing with my funk band Booty Vortex.
We’re fortunate that our adventures in video connect us with some amazing people living their good lives. There is much to be learned from hearing other people’s stories, so every once in a while we’re going to share some of the good people we meet with you. Without further ado…our first Good People Profile.
Good People: Deborah Szekley, Wellness Warrior
If you’ve ever enjoyed a spa day – or if you’re lucky enough to spend a whole week at a spa – you can thank Deborah Szekely. The 90-year old is considered by many to be the founder of the modern spa movement.
Way back in 1940, Deborah and her husband Edmund established the Rancho La Puerta spa in Tecate, Mexico, where guests enjoyed hikes, swimming, mud baths and Edmund’s lectures on health and diet. Nowadays it seems like there’s a spa on every corner, but at the time, there was no place like it. And the Szekelys message of healthy living caught on.
Eighteen years later, Deborah opened the luxury Golden Door Spa outside of San Diego, California. Golden Door became a retreat for celebrities like Zsa-Zsa Gabor, Burt Lancaster, Barbara Streisand and Oprah Winfrey.
Both spas are still in operation, as is Deborah. At 90, she’s no longer handling day-to-day operations, but she’s not retiring either. Her next act is bringing her lessons of health and wellness to the masses with a non-profit called Wellness Warrior. Her goal is to empower each of us to take action towards our own wellness by eating healthy and exercising – and to lobby the government to do its part to keep America healthy.
